Intellicart Re-design

Client

Zimmer Biomet

Industry

Medical

The Intellicart System simplifies and streamlines the management of surgical fluid and smoke waste hazards in the operating room.

I led the effort to improve usability and deliver a modern, intuitive interface that aligned with current design standards and kept the device competitive in the market.

Challenges

Findings

Uncovered Pain Points:

  • Information Overload & Poor Hierarchy → Screens were cluttered with dense data and controls, making it difficult to focus on critical tasks in the OR.

  • Outdated Visual Design → Harsh colors, low contrast, and inconsistent layouts reduced clarity and felt dated compared to modern medical interfaces.

  • Inefficient Workflows → Common tasks required too many steps, with navigation buried in menus and unclear labels.

  • Alert & Error Handling → Critical warnings lacked visual hierarchy, making them easy to miss in urgent situations.

Solution

Design Response

High Impact Improvements:

  • Reorganized Information Architecture → Simplified layouts with clear prioritization of key metrics (e.g., suction pressure, volume used).

  • Modernized Visual System → Created consistent visual themes with high-contrast typography, color-coded states, and modern iconography.

  • Streamlined Navigation → Introduced cleaner menus and restructured workflows so frequent actions were more accessible.

  • Improved Alerts → Designed clear, high-visibility warning states with standardized colors and iconography to support safety-critical decision-making.

The Process

How I got to the solution(s).

1. Lay of the Land

Mapped the landscape by reviewing existing documentation, evaluating current screens, and analyzing workflows to understand context and uncover opportunity areas.

Screen Evaluations

Conducted a full screen audit, tagging what worked, what needed improvement, and where usability could be enhanced – Total 65 screens

Opportunity Areas

Mapped the existing information architecture and workflows to identify gaps and highlight key pain points

User Flows

Designed optimized user flows to streamline tasks and improve efficiency.

2. Ideation

Started with quick solo paper sketches, then facilitated team brainstorms in Mural/Figjam to drive divergent thinking and expand ideas and take into wireframing.

My Initial Sketch Ideation

3. Visualization

Created three distinct visual concepts to help the client explore different styles and select a refreshed brand direction

Range of Visual Themes

4. Hi-Fi Frames

After the client selects a theme, I apply it across all wireframes—refining visuals at this stage to fine-tune details and ensure consistency

5. Mockups, Prototype & Handoff

Once the theme is finalized, I translate wireframes into high-fidelity mockups and build prototypes to showcase the user flows to test and refine.
